Position Title      Assistant Bus Dispatcher


Responsibilities:
    Assists in the daily assignments for bus drivers and attendants and maintains attendance records
    Coordinates the arrangement of vehicles, drivers, and attendants to properly follow busing schedules
    Plans, schedules, and assigns drivers for special transportation, such as field trips
    Maintains and updates daily dispatch sheets
    Handles inquiries from parents, students, and staff
    Assists with 19A Examiner and School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI) duties relating to staff records, departmental files, medical requirements and training classes.
    Operates a school bus or acts as a bus attendant, as needed

Minimum Training and Experience: Graduation from high school and one year of satisfactory bus driving and/or motor vehicle dispatching experience.

Mandatory Special Requirements: Candidates must satisfy all requirements of Article 19-A of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. Additionally, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education. Section 156.3 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education states, in part, that all drivers of school transportation conveyances shall be at least 21 years of age.

Position Title      Automotive Mechanic

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Two (2) years of experience as a skilled automotive and repairman, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, tractors and buses; Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, shock absorbers; Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and front and rear axles; Adjusts connecting rods and bearings; Adjusts steering mechanisms and align wheels; Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment; Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filters; Tunes engines and sets the timing; Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment; Body work repair; May operate a school bus on an assigned route.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATION: Eligibility for an appropriate New York State driver’s license and possession of license at time of employment.  Position requires operation of a school bus; special license procedures apply and applicants must be certified by the School District as meeting requirements promulgated by the New York State Commissioner of Education.

Position Title      Head Bus Driver

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
    The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of buses in a school district transportation system. A Head Bus Driver may supervise Bus Drivers, Bus Monitors and Bus Mechanics. Supervision is exercised over the work of Bus Drivers, Bus Monitors and/or Bus Mechanics by observation and reports. The work is performed under the general supervision of a Transportation Supervisor (or similar title), a school business official, or designee in accordance with established policies and procedures. Does related work as required.

Job Qualifications

Position Title      SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY PROGRAM COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is responsible work which involves researching, planning, developing and coordinating programs for school transportation safety and for improving driver training along with improving public awareness. Such programs would include educating the public, school administrators, drivers and students on all aspects of school bus safety. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a director of transportation. Does related work as required.

 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Plans transportation safety programs and/or training for both public and non-public schools; Conducts meetings with various schools and community groups to communicate district policies and programs regarding bus transportation and bus safety; Works with administrators, students, transportation personnel, school bus drivers and school bus attendants in developing a transportation safety program; Conducts driver training for district drivers and new drivers, including state mandated road test(s); Maintains records and files to comply with requirements of the State Education Department, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Transportation and the Board of Education; \Assists the director with establishing bus routes and bus stops; Assists in investigating inquiries from parents relating to school bus safety issues; May operate a school bus as determined or directed by the director.

1. Four (4) years of paid work experience in pupil transportation such as a bus driver or dispatcher,  which involved bus safety; and

Position Title      School Bus Dispatcher

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma; and two (2) years of paid work experience which involved planning vehicle routes, scheduling drivers and dispatching vehicles. Such experience must have included or been supplemented by at least one (1) year of office clerical, record-keeping work experience. NOTES: 1. If the incumbent is required to drive a school bus, the appointing authority shall have the responsibility for verification of the appropriate driver's license for the vehicle(s) being operated. 2. If examiner duties are required, it shall also be the responsibility of the appointing authority to ensure proper certification as an examiner (as defined by the Department of Motor Vehicle Law, Section 6.16).

REPORTS TO:  Director of Transportation

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Drive a bus on one or more regular routes as required
• Drives a bus on field trips and other special trips as required
• Assists in assigning bus drivers to routes; relays route assignments and other pertinent instructions to subordinate drivers; • Instructs bus drivers on the use/care of equipment in order to ensure driver compliance in such areas as bus cleanliness, proper street crossings, bus stop locations and other related activities and trains new employees, as necessary;
• Professionally answers the phones and relays information to drivers;
• Maintains, either manually or through an automated system, simple records, driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIR), such as mileage, fuel consumption, maintenance records, attendance, etc.;
• Prepares simple reports on driver activities on a monthly basis or as required by district policy;
• Provides input and assistance to the director for preparation of the department budget; • Performs dispatching duties requiring the operation of a two-way radio;
• Assists in the planning and creation of bus routes including homeless student transportation and shuttles; • Provides input to director for staff evaluations;
• May provide behind the wheel training for new bus drivers;
• May conduct yearly road tests of bus drivers as required by law;
• Creates testing schedules;
• Enters and accurately tracks field trips;
• Follows up on and responds to complaints, as needed;
• Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as Bus routing software, spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software;
• Receives program requests, develops, and maintains routes.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation
• Respond to communications from parents and administration

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Dependability, with a good knowledge of the bus operations, roads and bus routes in the school district; ability to understand, interpret, transmit instructions, and evaluate subordinate personnel; flexible, able to demonstrate empathy, ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; excellent customer service skills; ability to use computer applications such as bus routing programs, spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, payroll, and database software; good judgment, physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
12 month position. Salary and benefits based on negotiated agreement between the East lrondequoit Management Association and the Superintendent of Schools.
